The 10 most annoying Facebook users, along with a few special mentions. We've all seen them and they just need to stop!

The post The 10 most annoying Facebook users appeared first on Why SEO?.

ENOUGH with the food photos. “Time to shut it down.”

WE all know one of them. The friends who post endless photos of their food, or who constantly boast about their fitness regime. If Facebook wasn’t so damn political we probably would have unfriended them a long time ago. This is a list of the 10 most annoying kinds of Facebook users. What are your pet peeves? Have your say in the comments below!

The master chef

Remember back in the day when you’d whack together a really impressive meal and take it over to your neighbour’s house to show them? Yeah. Neither do I. Nobody really cares what you’re eating. Going beyond that, it takes a special kind of arrogance to post photos of the fancy five-star restaurants your attending. What a humblebrag, (we’ll get to that in a moment). In the mean time, food photos. Just. Don’t.

The passive aggressive status updater

Facebook is not your personal therapist. Vague, passive aggressive status updates can not replace therapy sessions. And there’s a Facebook group dedicated to this to prove it. If you have a problem with someone, confront them directly AND NOT ON FACEBOOK. If you need help, say so. But posting “I’ve had it with manipulative people” or “I’m literally crying right now” and then saying “nothing” when someone inevitably asks you what’s wrong, is not ok. You’re like the boy who cried wolf. Eventually, people will stop replying to your cries for attention. And then what are you going to do? Switch to Twitter? Expect less sympathy!

The fitness junky

Nobody cares that you just logged 25km on your Nike Fitness app. Or that you eat quinoa, kale and 6 shakes a day. It is not a replacement for real food. Every time you boast about your amazing healthy lifestyle your friends are plotting ways to sneak lard into your food. Also, organic doesn’t mean low fat. Nobody is jealous of your sugar-free organic cheesecake. It probably tastes like nothing. But it’s also probably still full of carbs. Which is fine because eat something for goodness sake!

The FourSquare king

He knows all the coolest bars and restaurants. Actually, the places you’ve only just discovered are already uncool and so 2012. And the only thing worse than someone who boasts about the hotspot he’s visiting (on a Tuesday night I might add), is someone who checks in at their own home. And names their shady shoebox studio “The Kingdom” or something equally wanky. Your check-ins may score you free entry or discounted drinks but for every dollar you save, your own personal stock will plummet. Meanwhile what are your friends doing while you’re busy proving to the world what a social butterfly you are? You’re probably missing out on some top-notch conversation. Put the phone down and enjoy the nightlife.

The sanctimonious parent

You constantly post photos of your children. And after that horrible, horrible birthing photo, your friends now know more about your va-jay-jay than they would ever wish to. Your offspring’s first poo or first solid meal is significant only to you. You are not the first person to have a child, and you’re not the last. Spare us your righteous indignation.

The brand man

If you insist on liking pages so that your next meal at Subway is free, at least change your settings so it doesn’t appear on the wall of all of your friends. Because now we’re getting spammed by them too. Also, most of the competitions you enter are fake. You can’t actually win that iPad, there’s a million pages just like it. Stop liking brands on Facebook. And that brings us to…

The gullible

Facebook is not going to start charging people to use the site. It’s also not going to shut down. Use your head. And if you can’t trust yourself to exercise basic logic, there’s always Google and Snopes.com. Calm down. Take a breath. And stop posting updates with links to fake save the whales petitions.

The humblebrag

If you really hated that new haircut you wouldn’t post five selfies of yourself doing the same duck-face. And I’m sure being hit on constantly is just SUCH a drag. The only two scenarios where bragging is appropriate is if you’ve met your favourite celebrity or have won an award. But if you insist on bragging at least be brazen about it. The internet will give you a pass. We’ve got your back. But your everyday false modesty is sickening. Instead of relying on Facebook to validate your self-worth, take some time out to appreciate how awesome your life is silently and offline. That’s true humility.

The third person

Stop writing about yourself in the third person. It’s just weird and wrong.

The “wish you were here” photo poster

“Wow, that stock photo you posted of the mansion with a pool overlooking the ocean makes me jealous of your high-flying life”, said no one ever. Nobody is fooled by the sunset photo you just pulled off Google. Or the stock photo of a model swimming under a waterfall. We know how much you earn. We like you as you are. Your life is just fine as it is.

Special mentions:

- People who post photos of their nails.
- People with too much time on their hands: Stop clogging up people’s walls.
- Racists, bigots, sexists and idiots. Take your vitriol elsewhere.
- Selfies. Enough with the duckface.
- Public Displays of Affection: Your perfect relationship sickens us.

There was a time, albeit quite a few years ago, when SEOs could regularly trick search engine algorithms into listing their websites at the top of the results. Those days are long gone.

In fact, the whole idea of gaining top rankings doesn’t even mean the same thing anymore. Search engine algorithms have become so much more complex, accounting for so many different variables, that no one can keep track of them all.

So if you think you or your SEO can beat the system, think again. There are lots of automated tools on the market, but the reality is that by exploiting 1 or 2 of those 200 or so SEO factors you’re only going to stand out to the search engines as an obvious cheater.

Well, Google was already analyzing something like 200 different ranking signals way back in 2009. That’s four years ago; today, they’re almost certainly analyzing a lot more. And even if they aren’t, it’s a fair bet that they’re not analyzing the same 200 signals that they used then. Of course, the search engine developers at Google are constantly look for ways they can make their algorithms work better. So that even if you do find an SEO exploit you are very likely to be knocked down in future with even more advanced updates.

We can all make a fair guess at some of the signals Google uses, however nobody in the SEO community knows all of them. The weighting of each of these signals is always varying. How important is it that your domain name features your target keyword? Anchor text? Your title tag? Only Google knows the answer.

Now you may have noticed the use of the term “algorithms,” plural, when talking about Google. That’s because the search giant doesn’t use a single algorithm. Do you suppose it uses the exact same algorithm for the medical industry that it uses for the construction industry? More than likely, it doesn’t. That’s because those 200-odd signals I mentioned earlier actually carry different weight and significance in different industries.

How far does this granularity go? Well, it has been noted that Google might have anywhere between 50 to 200 different algorithms running at any one time.

These different algorithms might be in play for different industries, different types of searches or testing the effects of various major algorithm changes (like panda or penguin) before a full push. And it’s just gotten more complicated over time, as Google has added personalization, geo-location, and social signals as factors and filters involved in search.

So any particular search is heavily affected by the searcher’s zip code, search history, previously visited sites, and even the websites his or her friends on Google+ have visited and liked – oh, excuse me, +1ed. This means that Google’s own keyword tool may be very out of date in the near future. Search is becomming increasingly more personal and social.

Naturally, Panda and Penguin have also made “beating” Google’s algorithms more complicated. These black-and-white critters are algorithms like no other; they’re the big dogs that sort through the entire index and over-rule all other algorithms, providing a nasty beat down if you’ve used any exploits or black hat methods. The major problem for webmasters is that if your site got hit, fixing the problem that caused it won’t bring immediate results. You have to wait until the next time Google runs this filter.

So what is the humble site owner doing in the meantime? Usually he’s trying to fix the main problem, but when it doesn’t yield immediate results it’s easy to get impatient and change something else or gives up entirely. So what are you supposed to do instead? Well, you may have to give up on the idea of “top rankings.”

Even if you do have the top rank in Google for your targeted keywords, turn off everything that tells Google who and where you are. Even if you’re still at the top, guess what? You’re still not the top result for many other searchers, who have all of their customizations turned on. It’s a catch-22. Fortunately, there is a way to resolve it. Keep an eye on algorithm changes, but don’t try to chase them.

It’s not about trying to get just the right amount of words on a page, having your keywords in just the right spot or even about the perfect backlink graph. Remember what you’re real mission is. At the end of the day none of us make money by ranking in search engines alone. It’s about building a site that visitors love and trust, focusing on the keywords they search and doing it better than your competitors.

Astronomers predict that the first confirmed Earth-like planet will be found next year.

More than 800 Earth-sized planets have been discovered orbiting stars since the first was found in 1995.

Fewer have been identified as having ideal temperatures, sitting inside the “Goldilocks Zone”, an orbital sweet spot – not too cold, not too hot – which allows water to exist in its liquid state. However, this alone does not mean they are inhabitable.

Only nine planets have been flagged as having the potential to sustain life.

But none have yet been officially declared “Earth-like” – either because of their excessive size, high speed or simply a lack of available information.

The vast bulk of discoveries so far have been Jupiter-like gas giants.

“I’m very positive that the first Earth twin will be discovered next year,” Astronomer Abel Mendez, from the Planetary Habitability Lab at the University of Puerto Rico, told Mashable today.

He and other astronomers say new instrumentation, such as the Kepler telescope, using advanced observational techniques are making it easier to detect small planets at greater distances – as well as get greater information on planets at smaller distances.

Such equipment is now available with NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope and the European Southern Observatory’s HARPS telescope in Chile.

An Earth-like planet, Kepler 22-B, has been discovered and it could be right for life.

Possibly the best candidate so far, Kepler 22-B is a “Goldilocks” planet, some 2.4 times bigger than Earth and was found by the Kepler Space Telescope in December last year. However it’s most obvious problem is the 600 light year distance to this planet.

“The first planet with a measured size, orbit and incident stellar flux that is suitable for life is likely to be announced in 2013,” Kepler team member Geoff Marcy said.

Two other planets recently found orbiting two of our closest neighbours, Tau Ceti and Alpha Centauri, are likely to also receive careful attention due to their closer proximity.

One of the most promising and nearby planets is Gliese 581g. This rocky world, if it does indeed exist, is just 20 light-years away from our solar system. It’s likely two to three times as massive as Earth and zips around its parent star, the red dwarf , every 30 days or so.

Based on current data, astronomers have estimated that there are some 200 billion stars in our galaxy, with at least 50 billion planets orbiting them.

They estimate that roughly 1 in 10,000 are similar to Earth. This could give us five million Earth’s in our galaxy alone.

Considering that the majority of Internet traffic originates in search engines and most people only follow links on the first page of results, it is extremely important for web masters to consider search engine optimization (SEO) when they are creating a site. Naturally this also means that websites that do not have high search engine rankings are going to have very few visitors. While SEO is based on keyword matching content, there are also a number of other factors that affect a website’s search engine rankings and many of them are related to the design of a website. In this article we’re talking about things like file naming structures, image identification, appropriate use of coding and ensuring that a website loads quickly.

If you need help with generating keywords or using them within your site we have information on that too.

Keyword Based File Names

Search engines operate via spiders or bots which index everything on your website at amazing speed and efficiency and they will identify each section of your content with different levels of relevance to the results. One important area, and a clear one to start with, is file and directory names. Most black hat SEO methods have been over-exploited and just don’t work anymore. Gone are the days of keyword stuffing meta tags or hidden page elements. Using a simple trick won’t enable you to top the rankings. In fact using these black hat keyword stuffing techniques is more likely to get your website de-indexed from the search engines all together. We can however, still use keywords in your file structure or URL’s, titles, headings, paragraph text and on embeded objects such as images. Naming files or even your file structure based on these keywords can give you a vital SEO boost without being hit for overusing keywords. You can even benefit from sorting images and files into multi-tier directories. For example, an address of “yourwebsite.com/keyword_one/keyword_two/keyword_three.html” will make search engine robots associate those three different keywords with your page before it even begins indexing the content.

Making the Most of Images

Something that a lot of people neglect is optimizing images. Because search engine robots cannot actually see an image, they take 100% of the information from the text and coding around the image. The most important part is the HTML IMG “ALT” tag, which is used to let search engines know what to show if the image is unavailable or if a vision impaired user is accessing the page they may use a program to convert this text to speech. If you want to make your website as user friendly as possible it is best practice to use these tags for that reason also. Search engines will also index images based on the text that is closest to the image on page. Therefore, an ideal place to position your keywords is within a caption or in a table. Using these methods to add your keywords to pictures can boost your website’s keyword associations in general and also improve your images position in the image search results.

Highlighting Keywords with Coding and Text

Webmasters can also emphasize their ideal keywords or phrases through using headers and titles. The search engine robots will index the entire site, but the title, headers and content headers are given much more weight than your average paragraph text. Titles can be as long as necessary, but using overly long titles can count as keyword stuffing, so we usually stick to less than 70 characters. Headers are another important area, because they work like bullet points, telling search engines what the most important points are. This helps you get what are called: long tail keyword matches. Most users of search engines (probably including yourself) put in a longer line of keywords in order to get more detailed results. Getting your website to come up for specific but important searches can be achieved with header optimization.

The META KEYWORDS tag should not be used anymore. This is an area which has recently dropped to zero value according to Google. Instead, you should use the META DESCRIPTION in order to place a 156 character piece of text that best describes the page. This is also usually read by the user when they scroll through the results.

Having a site structure with top level pages that are relevant to your users will get those pages also indexed. The site links provide better access to those top level pages. They will usually appear once your site is considered of high enough value and when someone does a specific search for you. It is often given to the top result. It is purely up to Google’s reasonable judgement whether these should appear or not.

Speed Matters

Most people will not wait a longer than usual time for a website to load, particularly if they are on mobile devices or low bandwidth. So search engines take this into account when they index and rank websites in order to return the most user friendly results. It is important for webmasters to optimize their code so that pages load as quickly as possible. You can do this by ensuring that images are compressed to a smaller file size and, therefore, load time. No matter how effective your SEO design practices are, a very slow website will still have problems with search engine rankings.

Opinion post by Martin Kuhlman. This post reflects the opinion of the author and not necessarily why-seo.info.

The popular photo-sharing service Instagram recently announced some comprehensive changes to its privacy policy, which resulted in an uproar. The changes could have allowed Instagram to sell users’ photos to third parties without the users’ consent.

The most reported sentence that seemed to freak out most people was, “To help us deliver interesting paid or sponsored content or promotions, you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you.” Now this has been happening for a while on Facebook where you’ll see one of your friends liking a certain product. And it’s no surprise, considering that Facebook purchased Instagram.

Unfortunately social media users are not as loyal as Instagram suspected. Many people chose to leave the service rather than submit to the new policies. The new policies were non negotiable and gave users 3 weeks notice. However, before the new rules could go into effect on January 16, Instagram backtracked, well somewhat.

Instead of treating their users with integrity and letting them digest the changes, the details were very short and gave users the opportunity to speculate about what it meant.

Kevin Systrom, Instagram Co-founder, said in a blog post that “we’re going to modify specific parts of the terms to make it more clear what will happen with your photos.” He stated that “it is not our intention to sell your photos,” though they will be probably be used in “innovative advertising that feels appropriate on Instagram.” And furthermore, he emphasized that “Instagram users own their content and Instagram does not claim any ownership rights over your photos.”

But are Instagram really listening to the feedback?

First, Instagram should try to remember that, although they have been purchased by Facebook, it is not Facebook. This privacy policy move, just stinks of Facebook. Unfortunately Facebook have a difficult mission keeping the social behemoth ahead of other sites whilst providing enough advertising to make it profitable enough for the investors. I believe that many people use Facebook purely because of its popularity, as there are usually fewer friends using other social sites. However, the general opinion is that very few people seem to trust the company’s motives. Particularly with the rapid increase in news feed ads, Facebook is rapidly squandering its reputation. It would be a shame for this to happen to Instagram too.

There’s another reason that what works for Facebook may not work for Instagram: it has far more competition which is just as good, depending on what you want to accomplish. There’s Flickr, Photo Shack, Picasa and of course there’s Pinterest, this is just to name a few. Wikipedia actually lists nearly 40 “major” photo sharing sites and admits that its list is non-exhaustive. Facebook dominates the social networking world, however Instagram is a popular choice whereby their strategic advantage is only based upon their filters.

I believe Instagram needs to remember that it shouldn’t act like Facebook. Please don’t condescend to your customers. Looking at Systrom’s blog post: “Legal documents are easy to misinterpret.” I don’t think theres anything to misinterpret in legal prose. Instagram seems to be imitating Facebook by apologizing for how things were perceived instead of for the issues themselves.

The action taken by Instagram, is patronizing and almost to the point of willful ignorance. Facebook, has been down this exact road before, and the same thing happened.

Instead of a blog post about us misinterpreting their changes, when the tide of reaction on the Internet got too loud to ignore, Instagram should have done it right the first time. Thanks to Facebook they have plenty of experience in user outrage over terms of use.

Kesha’s hit “Die Young,” currently number three on Billboard’s Hot 100 weekly singles chart, is being pulled by some radio stations and drastically losing airplay time with others in the wake of Friday’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in which a gunman killed 20 children and six adults before turning the gun on himself.

On Tuesday night, Kesha responded to the radio news in a tweet:

Kesha’s tweet has gone viral with more than 3,000 retweets and nearly 1,500 favorites in three hours.

Months ago the 25-year-old singer and rapper, Kesha, told radio and TV personality Carson Daly that the concept for the song “was to live each and every single day like it’s your last and to always remain having a youthful spirit no matter how old I get.”

Take a listen to the song for yourself:

Photography is how I provide for him, clothe him, put him in school. Photography is my passion, my calling, and my means of livelihood. Now Instagram and Facebook want to take my hard earned imagery, and use it to generate income for themselves. What they have done is signal the end and failure of what could have been a revolutionary social media platform for visual communication. So for now, I must take a step back and reassess my place on Instagram.
Those are his pics. He put a lot of work into them . Uh. Dude walks around, snaps a couple pics with his phone, throws a couple filters on them shits and throws them online for whoever to see. He isn’t a photographer and his gallery isn’t a résumé. Instagram is just something to do . How dare you! His pics are art. And he deserves to be compensated for his work . Really? How much compensation was he getting for his art before Instagram? And how much is he going to make if he starts posting somewhere else ? Whatever. You don’t get it. No one should make money off your work and not give you a dime. That’s stealing . Ok. Obviously you’re upset. The Instagram sky is falling. I get it. If not please take a moment to Google it and inform yourself. We’re all going to feel different about what this means for us as individual creators and that is expected. I see myself as a ‘cautious optimist,’ so I have my fingers crossed that they, Instagram, will listen to the voice of the community and reverse the new terms of service, but I’m not holding my breath. I don’t feel like debating the terms of service or being too nostalgic about the old days of Instagram, I feel that it’s much better just to take our work and more importantly friendship and conversation to another place that respects our rights and ownership as creators. Let’s move the party to a new location. Until then, I’ll be posting any new photographs on Flickr user name Koci Hernandez , Starmatic and EyeEm user Koci. I’ll keep this account open until January 16 so that I can follow the developments and continue to be optimistic about a possible change. #againstnewtos
lbm – I support Instagram! Here’s why: Instagram is a service and community that means a lot to me. I think the users are the coolest dang collection of photonuts on the web, and I love that it’s introducing a whole new generation to the joys of image making. I put a lot of time and energy into encouraging photo friendships through my various projects, but Instagram does more each day than I’ll be able to do in my lifetime. The photowalks, the meet ups, even the way the app is set up to introduce you to photos and photographers your friends like, all bring people together in meaningful ways at an enormous scale. I’ll be honest: I’m friends and neighbors with several Instagram staffers and my husband works for Facebook. So maybe I’m more willing than most to give them the benefit of the doubt through this PR disaster. But I do really believe they are trying to find the best and most graceful ways to turn this startup into a business. It’s not easy, and it’s not tried and true. It’s a daily experiment, and one that the staff seems to learn quickly from. Please check out the recent post to the Instagram blog and give them a chance to make this right. I’ll miss you if you go!

Why has Australia's ad watchdog, censored the men's magazine "Zoo" for this Facebook post?

The post “Demeaning” Facebook Image Banned appeared first on Why SEO?.

Australia’s ad watchdog, the Advertising Standards Bureau has censored men’s magazine, “Zoo” for this Facebook post. The complaint read:

“The image, disturbing nature of having a disembodied woman and the offensive, clearly sexist and even abusive nature of some responses on a page being used to advertise this product should not be allowed. Both the pictures, the questions that are posed and the responses are regularly demeaning and unacceptable to women. Women are objectified and sexualised.”Advertising Standards Bureau

Just a few of the lovely comments on the post:

The Zoo magazine publisher, ACP argues, that the post is editorial material and not advertising. Adding that “(men’s) choice of Zoo magazine is for a purpose — to engage with content that doesn’t require too much thought.”You can decide based on their Facebook page.

Is a brand’s Facebook page content advertising or editorial?
